United States: This week, the weather could get messy across the United States just as people are traveling for Thanksgiving. The National Weather Service warns of rain and snow in the eastern US, which might make travel tricky.

In the Pacific Northwest still recovering from a large storm that killed two last week, rain and snow are also expected.

The majority of the country is expected to see temperatures drop.

The worst of the weather will hit the east coast near the end of the week and just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

As reported by BBC.com, Rain is likely Thursday over the eastern seaboard as a low-pressure system draws north toward the Atlantic coast.

It could also dump snow on higher elevations and colder parts of north-east states like Maine and New Hampshire.

A cold front is also due in the south-east on Thursday and there is rain in prospect.

Lake effect snow is possible in the Midwest and Great Lakes region this weekend, the National Weather Service says.

Wet weather doesn’t stop with the western US either. The National Weather Service is like also warning that also a winter storm warning is in effect until Wednesday for parts of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Tuesday is when the worst of the storm will strike.

With wind gusts as high as 50 mph (81 kph), heavy snow is expected for higher elevations.

Roads are much likely to be snow covered and travel delays are likely with ‘very difficult travel’ midmountain up to 5,500ft (1,676m) possible, said the National Weather Service.

In the meantime, another atmospheric river event is on tap for central California for Tuesday after the region experienced a similar phenomenon last week.

Communities in the Pacific Northwest are still recovering from last week’s bomb cyclone, an intense weather event when air pressure drops quickly off the coast.

It also unleashed mass flooding and power outages for hundreds of thousands of people. It could be even wetter in the affected areas this week.

A low-pressure system expected to generate costal rain for Washington, Oregon and California is being predicted by the National Weather Service.
