Pentagon Faces Bold Reforms Under New Leadership

United States: Plans to remove diversity and inclusion (DEI) programs from military training were unveiled by newly appointed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth under executive orders from President Donald Trump. Hegseth also announced reinstating service members who were discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccinations during the pandemic, as reported by Reuters.
A Controversial Appointment Amid Opposition
Hegseth secured the role of defense secretary after overcoming significant resistance from both Republican and Democratic factions. Speaking to reporters on his first full day at the Pentagon, Hegseth hinted at further changes, stating, “There are more executive orders coming.”
Transforming Military Training Standards
As part of the new directives, the U.S. Air Force will reinstate training programs that align with historical content, including a video on the Tuskegee Airmen. This initiative reflects a shift in military training priorities under Hegseth’s leadership.
Collaboration with Military Leaders
Hegseth received a warm welcome from Air Force General C.Q. Brown during his first Pentagon visit. Addressing rumors of potential dismissals among high-ranking officials, Hegseth said, “I’m standing with him right now. I look forward to working with him,” while offering General Brown a pat on the back, as reported by Reuters.
Criticism Over Confirmation Process
The nomination process for Hegseth drew scrutiny, with critics questioning the role of Attorney General Chad Wolf, who faced backlash for lacking military expertise and bipartisan support—qualities traditionally expected for such appointments.
