Judge Orders Elon Musk to Provide Records on Federal Spending Cuts

Judge Orders Elon Musk to Provide Records on Federal Spending Cuts

United States: A U.S. judge required Elon Musk, together with his Department of Government Efficiency, to provide multiple records combined with answers describing their work to cut federal spending.

Court Demands Transparency on DOGE’s Authority

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued her ruling on Wednesday night from Washington D.C. through a lawsuit filed against Elon Musk and DOGE by 14 Democratic state attorneys together with President Donald Trump as a defendant, as reported by Reuters.

The states based their case on constitutional grounds that the Appointments Clause’s power can be exercised only by Senate-confirmed officials; thus, they pursued discovery procedures to obtain materials from Musk.

Discovery Requests Target Musk’s Role

Under Judge Tanya Chutkan’s directive as an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, both the decision-makers involved in cuts at DOGE and their authorized scope of action became her primary targets.

“Defendants argue that the ‘inner workings of government’ are immaterial to an Appointments Clause claim,” she wrote. “The court is not convinced, but that is a legal issue appropriate for resolution after a fulsome briefing.

“At this stage,” she added, “it is sufficient that plaintiffs’ discovery requests intend to reveal the scope of DOGE’s and Musk’s authority.”

What Information Must Be Disclosed?

The U.S. Department of Justice, representing the defendants, failed to reply to a request for comment on Thursday.

Chutkan authorized discovery requests to cover material dealing with agencies together with employees, contracts, grants, federal funding, legal agreements, and data management systems that connect to or work with the 14 states and their funded entities.

The court dismissed the states’ effort to acquire sworn testimonies by deposition and established an exception for Trump regarding her order.

For decades, both Republicans and Democrats have maintained their opposition to court demands for testimony and privileged information from their senior White House advisers, as reported by Reuters.

Deadline Set for Compliance

DOGE and Musk must meet the requirements set by Chutkan before April 2.

The complaint filed during the lawsuit aimed to stop DOGE from accessing multiple government information systems while attempting to dismiss federal staff either through termination or temporary assignment.
