Houston Midwife Faces Charges for Illegal Procedures 

United States: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton made public statements on Monday about the Houston-area midwife charged with illegal abortion practice and running unlicensed healthcare centers. The recent case demonstrates how Texas maintains strict regulations on abortion while its laws have further tightened since the U.S. Supreme Court abolished Roe v. Wade in 2022. Midwife Arrested as Authorities Seek Clinic Shutdowns 

Texas law enforcement officers made an arrest of Maria Margarita Rojas before they proceeded to request judicial intervention which ordered the closure of her medical facilities. The attorney general’s office states that Texas law allows financial penalties to exceed $100,000 for each violation that occurs. 

“Texas law protecting life is clear, and we will hold those who violate it accountable,” said Attorney General Paxton.

Unlicensed Clinics and False Medical Credentials 

Officials allege that Rojas operated multiple facilities under the name Clinicas Latinoamericanas and employed unlicensed staff who falsely presented themselves as medical professionals. The three identified clinics have not responded to requests for comment. 

Texas’ Strict Abortion Laws and National Context 

Texas law authorizes abortions exclusively through medical providers who verify life-threatening conditions or major bodily systems impairment for pregnant women. Texas tightened legislative restrictions after the Supreme Court declared Roe v. Wade unconstitutional last June. Since 1973 the United States Constitution had protected a person’s right to choose abortion through the court ruling of Roe v. Wade, as reported by HealthDay.

The legal crackdown against physicians who offer abortion services continues to expand throughout the nation because a doctor from New York recently faced criminal charges after he provided abortion medication to a young patient in Louisiana.
